A close encounter with Viral Meningitis
It’s almost two months since it happened and when it happened I had no idea that I had it.
I only remembered that I was being carried into an ambulance and I was in a total state of confusion. The last thing I remembered before that was when I was standing in front of my dressing table. I was already dressed in a red dress, getting ready to go to work. It was a Monday morning, on the 8th October 2007.
A few days earlier, I was coming down with running nose. I had a few headaches and I thought I would just brush aside with panadols.
Coming back to the ambulance scene, I realised later from my husband that I had gone into a fit at home and another time when I reached the Changi General Hospital. The next five days weren’t pleasant at all.
Somehow, the last time I remembered I was hospitalised happened when I went into a high fever at a very young age. Now back to the October 2007, I had to be put on glucose drips most of the time and tagged onto urinary bag to drain the urine.
I dragged the blood tests as my finger would be picked at least 2-3 times a day to check the blood glucose level. The most painful of all was the extraction of my spinal cord fluid. Fortunately, it wasn’t as painful as the epipural.
Diagnosis: Viral meningitis. I had no idea how I got it. I certainly wasn’t glad that I caught it but I was certainly very touched to know my family members, some of my friends and colleages came to visit me.
It was indeed one of my most happiest moment - to know that I am being loved and cared for. I would like to take this moment to thank the following people - my parents, my husband, my parents-in-law especially my mother in law who called the ambulance as my husband ran to her panicking, my dear beloved boss (she’s really great!), my colleague and godsister Yvonne, Lifen, my brother and his fiancee. I couldn’t remember the rest whether they have visited me but I would like to mention these few - Susan Han, Karen Poh, Jeanette, Lalithaa, Chea Theng…
I would just like to tell you all I value friendships a lot and if I fall short of thanking you, pls let me know… May you be blessed with lots of love, joy and happiness!
