Chemistry in a band

March 22nd, 2008 by mayonghs

Recently, I’ve just gone for an audition for a band.  The songs were selected by the member of the band, one of them wasn’t my familiar repertoire.

Perhaps I was too anxious to create an impression, and the desire to be selected was too much for me to handle.  I wasn’t really myself at the audition.  To me, it was a terrible disaster.

I could have done better but I guess it was much more than that.  The chemistry between the band members weren’t really there.  They weren’t really familiar with my songs either.  They weren’t playing tight and the same person that told me to prepare two specific songs weren’t free to prepare the slower song.

I have been thirsting to be on stage again after a long absence.  I hope I can find a band that gels in with my style and are willing to be committed as well.

I put too much expectation on myself and the rest of the team.  I suspected there was an invisible barrier building up between me and the rest of the band.

I wish them all the best and hope they could find a songbird that fits in the missing puzzle.

A close encounter with Viral Meningitis

December 1st, 2007 by mayonghs

It’s almost two months since it happened and when it happened I had no idea that I had it.

I only remembered that I was being carried into an ambulance and I was in a total state of confusion.  The last thing I remembered before that was when I was standing in front of my dressing table.  I was already dressed in a red dress, getting ready to go to work.  It was a Monday morning, on the 8th October 2007.

A few days earlier, I was coming down with running nose.  I had a few headaches and I thought I would just brush aside with panadols.

Coming back to the ambulance scene, I realised later from my husband that I had gone into a fit at home and another time when I reached the Changi General Hospital.  The next five days weren’t pleasant at all.

Somehow, the last time I remembered I was hospitalised happened when I went into a high fever at a very young age.  Now back to the October 2007, I had to be put on glucose drips most of the time and tagged onto urinary bag to drain the urine.

I dragged the blood tests as my finger would be picked at least 2-3 times a day to check the blood glucose level.  The most painful of all was the extraction of my spinal cord fluid. Fortunately, it wasn’t as painful as the epipural.

Diagnosis: Viral meningitis.  I had no idea how I got it.  I certainly wasn’t glad that I  caught it but I was certainly very touched to know my family members, some of my friends and colleages came to visit me.

It was indeed one of my most happiest moment - to know that I am being loved and cared for.  I would like to take this moment to thank the following people - my parents, my husband, my parents-in-law especially my mother in law who called the ambulance as my husband ran to her panicking, my dear beloved boss (she’s really great!), my colleague and godsister Yvonne, Lifen, my brother and his fiancee.  I couldn’t remember the rest whether they have visited me but I would like to mention these few - Susan Han, Karen Poh, Jeanette, Lalithaa, Chea Theng…

I would just like to tell you all I value friendships a lot and if I fall short of thanking you, pls let me know… May you be blessed with lots of love, joy and happiness!

Blogging – How to attract readers to your blog?

June 11th, 2007 by mayonghs

You’ve finally created a blog and you’ve made your first post. Now how do you get people to actually read what you’re blogging about?

Here are some tips on promoting your blog.

1) Quality Content - Interesting content will keep your readership returning. Update your blog regularly.

So what if you aren’t the best writer?  Maybe you haven’t done much writing in your life and you’re afraid that people will judge you for your style but people generally don’t care. Only pro writers and editors care about placing each comma and semicolon where it belongs. You don’t have to worry too much about that. People just want to be entertained. They want information. That’s what they’re searching for when they find you on a search results page or stumble on you by accident. Write something from your heart. That’s where the best writing comes from.

But if you’re just unsure of yourself so much that it stifles your progress, don’t let it! Take a look at a blog called BoingBoing (http://boingboing.net). All kinds of stuff goes on there, usually funny or interesting stuff in quick bytes that people love. Post funny or interesting pictures, videos, podcasts, etc. Then, just use a few words to describe what people are listening to or seeing

Googlebot, which is Google’s web-crawling robot loves content. The more you update your blog, the more frequent the search engine spiders will return to it.

2) Write about your passion.

What do you love?  It could be sports, or making money.  It doesn’t matter. What does matter is what’s important to you because that shows in your writing. If you show that corner of yourself, people will come to read.

3) Let people know you

Once you started writing about your passion, remember to inject some personality in it. What makes a good read is when you find someone passionate about their topic, enough to let themselves show through.  Always try to put some of yourself into what you’re writing so that other human beings can relate.

4) Don’t solicit

Especially for Internet Marketers: Never try to sell things in every post you make. Oh sure, once in a while, you may have something great to tell readers about, but if you try to sell them something in every post you make, people will soon tire of it and just shy away. Just blog with pure information, once in a while, you might want to recommend a product, but basically, your blog should just provide information for people. Let your links at the side or the anchor text that finishes every post point to your products.  Keep the selling at the bare minimum.

5) Take part in forums that are related to blogging. Ask other bloggers for their opinion on your blog and take their suggestions to heart.

6) Publish an RSS/Atom/XML feed. If you’re using Blogger, you can turn on RSS feed by clicking on settings in your dashboard and then clicking on site feed and make sure that your settings are set to yes.

RSS Readers are available for free at http://www.rssreader.com/ You can subscribe to as many rss feeds as you want. This is a wonderful resource for niche research. As is http://Nichebot.com/ just enter a few keywords to see how many times that keyword has been searched for.

Inventory.Overture.com/d/searchinventory/suggestion/ works the same way.

7) Carefully choose your subject titles, taking into consideration what other internet users may be searching for.

Use keywords in your title. I suggest subscribing to Word Tracker. Their report of the most popular searches is published each Tuesday and distributed to over 30,000 subscribers.

Focus on writing for people and more people will come to read your blog.  Keyword density is going the way of the Oldsmobile; though there are some keyword stuffers still around, keyword density is pretty much obsolete.

Find your niche or Unique Selling Proposition (USP)

Technorati.com , is a blog search engine that also lists the top search words. The more targeted your keywords are, the greater your return in search engines will be.

8) Involve yourself in commenting on other blogs. You can gain a loyal readership just by offering feedback to your fellow bloggers. The comment feature allows you to add a link back to your blog as well.

9) Be sure to include your blog address in forum signatures and in your email signature.

10) Submit your blog to directories.

Submit your blog’s url to Technorati, Daypop, Blogdex and Popdex.

11) Write articles. Include a resource box in your article and submit it to article directories such as http://iSnare.com

Write articles about your chosen niche and leave a link to you blog in your resource box at the end of your article. Do the same thing with Newsletter and Ezine Publishers in the niche of your choice. Don’t forget to post those articles to your own blog

12) If you’re using blogging software such as Blogger, there is an option to notify the central blog update services (such as http://weblogs.com) whenever you’ve made a new entry to your blog. Make sure that this option is turned on! In blogger, click on publish in your dashboard and make sure that your settings are set to yes under notify weblogs. Alternatively, you can go to http://pingoat.com and send out a ping each time you update your blog. This lets everyone know that you’ve just updated your blog.

13) Link to other blogs. Use services like blogrolling, which is similar to linking. Blogrolling allows you to maintain an updated list of your favorite blogs. But, don’t build a long blog roll of sites that you have no intention of returning to. There is nothing more annoying then visiting a blog that has a humongous blogroll.

Be patient, traffic doesn’t happen overnight. The best way that I’ve found to increase traffic is by getting to know people. Spend what free time that you have, reading blogs, leaving feedback and building friendships. Try to leave comments on the blogs that you visit as often as you can. While you are waiting for the traffic to come, just enjoy blogging. You’ll be improving your writing in the process.

Eventually you’ll build a network of not just readers, but friends and loyal supporters. Blogging is not just about marketing; it’s about creating lasting relationships.

Living the Dream

June 6th, 2007 by mayonghs

Have you heard of the recent singing contest organised by Channel 5?  It’s called "Live the Dream".

In terms of the music scene in Singapore, I’m quite half-hearted about where this will lead us.  I have to thank our lord of being blessed with a good voice and the ability to express myself in terms of vocal performance.

In me, the dream to be a professional singer still lingers in my mind.  It’s quite a tragedy if I were to go into the top 14 and not being able to perform for 1 whole year without the producer’s consent.

My husband has nearly completed my lounge fusion music and if I were to go for this contest, I might not be able to perform elsewhere or even promote this music.

Unfortunately, the audition for solo category was already over.  It was held last Sunday.  There’s still hope for those who have been nominated by their friends, relatives or colleagues.  I wonder whether there’s anyone out there who believes in my ability and would want to nominate me for this contest.

Nevertheless, myspace blog was recently spotted by a UK radio station and was asked to send the promo CD kit for airplay.  Hopefully, my husband’s firepod is back after being sent for repair for several days.

For myself. For my husband. For our dreams, let’s hope there will be a day when the local music scene accepts local talents and local music.

6 Sure Winning Tips you Must Know for your Success in Home Based Affiliate Business

May 29th, 2007 by mayonghs

Today, you are going to learn great tips on how to be successful in the home based affiliate marketing business online. You’ll discover workable and powerful tips for your success in your home based affiliate marketing business. Once you know those tips, I am sure that you can start your home based affiliate business in the right way and grow it dramatically.

ATTENTION!: If you are truly serious about how to sell more affiliate products and earn more affiliate commission especially if you are a beginner in the affiliate marketing world.

Now that you have decided to take the first step to set up a business for yourself, you would need to ensure that you are doing all the right things. Affiliate marketing businesses are less risky than traditional businesses but you would still need to conduct this venture as you would like in any other businesses. If this is your sole source of income you’ll want to give it your best and make it as successful as possible. In this article, we will look at a number of ways to get your business going and make it successful. By following the advice in this article your affiliate marketing business will get off to a great start and stay successful that way.

The first golden rule of home based affiliate business is to identify the demand. With online affiliate marketing programmes, you’ll likely be giving a range of products to sell. Check out the demand of these types of things. You should try to stay away from trendy items. They’ll sell like hotcakes one minute but you’ll be giving them away the next. You want things that you know people want and need. It will be easier for you to earn more affiliate commission by giving what people truly want and need. That way your long term sales objectives will be met.

The second rule: I would recommend you not to limit yourself to just one affiliate product or market. Try to offer a variety of things. Many online affiliate marketing programmws offer a selection and it is best to go with these. Basing your home based affiliate business on one affiliate product may work in the short term, however, someone will eventually come along with something better or cheaper.

The third rule: You would need to set your home based affiliate business apart from other competitors. Establish what makes you and what you offer better than others. What do you offer that sets you apart from other home based affiliate businesses? One of the most significant difference is to sell more affiliate products, more outstanding than your competitors. My experiences show that there are many ways to be outstanding such as offering high quality services, provide superb customer support between your customers and merchant, and work closely with merchants.

The fourth rule: You must definitely insure your home based affiliate business. Everything can be fine one day but life can always take a funny turn. Accidents can happen to anyone. Ask yourself what will happen if one of your products hurts someone. Today, people can be sued for just about anything. Make sure you are insured in case that the worst situation happens. Personally, I would love to recommend you to backup everything for your home based affiliate business to ensure that you can drive consistency and grow continuously your home based affiliate business.

The fifth rule: You should always do your best to ensure fast and efficient service to your customers or subscribers. However, there will come a time when there is a glitch. You need to keep your customers informed and aware of what is happening. Sometimes, there are things that happen which are beyond our control. Most customers are very forgiving if they are made aware of this. Keeping your customers in the dark could result in loosing them for good.

The last tip is to keep your customers or subscribers happy. The happier they are, the more likely they are coming back. Thus, there will be more opportunities to earn more money. Offer your customers incentives such as savings on their next purchase. It may cost you more but only in the short term. Happy customers can even referring you to others.

The home based affiliate businesses are easier in the fact that they minimize risk. Other than that, you would need to work very hard to keep your customers happy. Set yourself apart from others and protect yourself against the worst. By following the advice in this article you will be giving your business the best possible chance for success.

Learning from Daegan Smith

May 19th, 2007 by mayonghs

Learning from Daegan Smith

It was once in a life time experience, learning from Daegan Smith. He finally came down to Singapore and I managed to see him twice, first on Thursday and the second time, today at PSB Academy. Most of all, I managed to take a personal photo with him to keep for momento.

So much hype was written about him all over internet, even our online support, Onlineincomehub was appreciative that he was willing to come down to give us a thorough explanation about the Internet MLM Marketing tools.

There were many talks by fellow members citing that they had spent thousands and thousands of dollars through a few days seminar learning what Internet MLM Marketing was all about. But at the end of the day, they found there was no personal touch from those speakers..

Daegan is different. He was down to earth and he did not hesitate to share with us what he learnt and did. He was also not shy to show us his mistakes and how we could avoid those mistakes altogether.

Of course, today, he only covered the basics of internet marketing, which could still be overwhelming for those new to Internet MLM Marketing.

Towards the end of the workshop, he wanted to introduce a fresh new product, introducing a two live web seminar where he personally coached those who signed up. He even guaranteed to those first 20 who signed up that they would get back the money they have invested. Of course, such generous offer comes with a price. Each sign up has to pay S$1997, which is a lot to me.

If I were earning a high income or suddenly strike lottery, I wouldn’t mind throwing this sum of money to invest.

My next step is to start up my own lead capture and get web hosting, auto-responder & ad tracker in place.

In the meantime, I still found it useful to continue adding friends to my friendster and myspace account. And, I’m still trying to participate meaningfully in the forum and adding blogs.

7 days before Alex turns 11months

November 26th, 2006 by mayonghs

27 November 2006

It’s been a long time since I last posted a blog of my own pregnancy & delivery of my son. I can’t imagine time really flies.

Throughout these few months, I’ve brought him to and fro, with the help of my beloved father, between my parent’s CCK flat and my inlaw’s private apartment. Needless to say, I found it easier to communicate with my mum than my mother in law.

For the first 6 months, I stayed at my mum’s place to recuperate and to concentrate at my work and my son. His medical routine checkups and vaccinations were done at the CCK polyclinic.

Throughout these nearly 11 months, I took pictures and videos of him. He was most happy between 5 - 9months, and never seem to be scared of strangers. In fact, he flashed his infectious smiles to all who saw him.

I was glad that he won 1st runner up at the Kampong Kembangang CC’s Baby Show 2006 (24 Sep 2006). I was still breastfeeding him then but am weaning off by the end of Nov 2006. He has shown signs of rejecting direct breastfeeding since late Sep, possible reasons could be due to my low supply, eventhough I took time to express 2 times every working day.

Now, nearly 11 months, he would still flash smiles at familiar faces. He grew so attached to my mother in law, my mum & especially my dad. He has already started to babble and just more than 1-2 weeks ago, I heard him say ‘ma ma’. He called ‘pa pa’ first, followed by ‘ah ma’.

I hope he could really start to talk soon. Even before I attended the Baby Sign Language workshop by Essie Tan (12 Aug 06), I’ve started baby sign language with him. Subsequently, I bought Rachel’s Vol 1 & 2 and played them often for him to watch.

He could already stand up at the cot and has started to stand up for a short while without any support. He still needed night feed for most of the nights with Nestle Nan 2HA. Right now, he has two protuding front teeth on the top and another two at the bottom. Two other new teeth are starting to show on the top, each next to the two teeth. (Total no of teeth: 6)

He could even sit upright at the sarong sling ("Neo muah"). Need to buy more bumper for the cot, to protect his head from sustaining too much knocks after falling down.

I’ve just bought some NTUC policies for him last Saturday. Hopefully, his education would be properly financed in 21years’ time.

This coming Thursday, we will be taking some studio photos with him. Hopefully, the pictures would turn out well.

Birth of my son, Alex Nam

January 6th, 2006 by mayonghs

After waiting for over 40 weeks, my beloved son, Alex is finally born. After past exceeding the due date 28 Dec, I was beginning to feel anxious whether baby Alex would be born healthy. He was such a good boy in my womb, seldom kicking very hard with occasional turns and couple of burping moments.

After seeing my gynae, Dr Wee on the day of the due date, we hesitated to make a decision to induce. We decided to wait a few more days and scheduled to see him the next following Wed, 4 Jan 2006.

Over the next few days, I went out as usual. Didn’t want to tie myself down to wait for the contraction to start. In fact, there were no contractions yet. Everything seem quiet. I even went out on the eve of New Year with Calvin’s colleagues to sing karaoke. We went home in the wee hours of New Year.

What spur our next decision came from my mom’s call. She was anxious for me, urging me to go for induction. I weighted the pros and cons, consulted both Calvin’s sister and Dr Wee. Finally, the decision was to go for induction. I didn’t want it at first cos Dr Wee forewarned that it would take a few days. True enough, it took me more than a day to deliver Alex.

We booked in after Sunday midnight, arriving there @ 1am plus. Originally set for induction to take place at 6am, the nurse suggested I should induce immediately. Fortunately, Calvin could accompany me at the delivery suite, although he’s not allowed to spend 24 hours with me at my B1 ward. The first pill didn’t work.

I got to eat breakfast, lunch & dinner on Monday, 2 Jan 2006. Visitors could only come during 12nn - 2pm or 6pm - 8pm. Then, came the second pill. After dinner, I complained of pain on the lower part of my body. I desperately needed a pain relief. So I called up Dr Wee, and after dinner @ 8pm, I went back to the delivery suite again. The charges there are on an hourly basis. In fact, since then, I never went back to my ward until my delivery on Tuesday evening.

The 3rd pill was inserted with no avail. I was given epidural but it was the most excruciating experience in my entire life. I never knew that there were several needles piercing into my spinal cord despite the asthetician assuring me it was only ‘ants bite’. The lower pain came back and another asthetician were called. He gave me an increased dosage but it didn’t work. It turned out two of the tubes came off and he had to get his senior to repeat the insertion. Luckily, I was already numb at the back. The cervix would need to be open by 10cm in order for the baby’s head to go thru. They decided to go on drips and increased by the dosage when no contractions were felt. At 8pm plus on Tuesday night, my cervix was still as tight - only 3cm. Dr Wee told us that if by midnight, the cervix did not open for 5 - 6cm, he would not hesitate to do a caecerean on me.

I began to send sms to my friends who were fellow Christians or Catholics for their prayers. The pain on the lower part went away. Around 10plus towards 11pm, the nurse came as usual to remove my urine thru a tube. She saw something unbelievable - trace of baby’s head. Within less than 3 hours, my cervix has dilated to the delivery size. Dr Wee was called in and to my amazement, he was so casually dressed. I was amused, thought he was wearing shorts, maybe I’m wrong.

In less than 30 minutes, my beloved Alex was born! Praise the lord for his compassion. I never thought I would have any children but he has blessed me with such a lovable boy. There’s going to be a tougher road for me now he’s born but I will cherish every moment with him and my husband…. Another unbelievable news about my boy’s weight, I thought he would have been more than 3kg heavy. It turned out he’s only 2.672kg when he was born… So cute… my cutie little boy boy… 8) - Born on 3 Jan 2006.
